All thirteen children surround mother as we make our way up the grassy hill. It is Mother’s Day and we follow our beloved parent, wishing to honor her. Our voices pipe up desiring to know what we can get her on this special day. Mother smiles and says, “A hug will suit me fine”. We each take a turn embracing the woman who works so hard for us and she responds by kissing our cheeks. Afterwards, Mother finds a cozy spot, sits down in the grass, and cracks open her Bible. As she reads, we listen, and then she sings to us, too.

Recently one of Big Sky’s oldest and most extraordinary ranches caught fire during the night. Fortunately, nobody was at the Rainbow Ranch to be hurt, but unfortunately, nobody was there to hear the smoke alarms. Because of this, Big Sky Fire Chief Jason Revisky estimates the fire burned for approximately two hours before it was noticed by someone driving along the highway who called 911 shortly after midnight. In the dead of night along this dark road, the observant driver was likely the main reason the building is still standing, much of it with minimal damage.

I usually don’t spend three weeks in a row just on our Yellowstone observations. However, this spring has been such a different one. Maybe it is because there is still so much snow that it’s easier to observe birds. The deep snows in the meadows are keeping the bison closer to the roadways and elk are hugging the hillsides and emerging meadows. Each time we go in the park, there just seems to be more to write about it!

This past week brought another round of daily snow showers and perpetually gloomy skies. You can see where recent snow storms have deposited a layer of white covering older, melting snows that had resembled dirty, gray piles of concrete. Spring seems be just around the corner but taking too long to arrive. I think everyone here is developing a grumpiness that will only be cured by two or more consecutive warm and sunny days enjoying Yellowstone Park.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is taking a conservative approach to managing the state’s paddlefish season. Paddlefish reproduction is down after an extended drought with low water flows over the past several years. This, combined with increased fishing pressure for adult paddlefish, makes more conservative management of these long-lived fish essential.

When Debbie Feigle created the Bozeman’s first Discovery Map in 2007, she knew it could be a great resource for both visitors and local business owners. Ms. Feigle had in mind using her one-of-kind map to help local businesses capture a greater share of the $2.76 billion Montana tourism economy. The more than 2 million travelers who visit Gallatin County annually are inspired by the innovative graphics and creative icons on Ms. Feigle’s map.
